Michelle Heyman made Liberty A-League history during the inaugural Unite Round on Saturday as she became the first player in the league’s history to hit the 100 goal milestone.
The A-League and Matildas legend bagged a double for Canberra United in their 3-1 win over Adelaide United to notch her 100th and 101st goals in the competition.
Heyman, 35, is an ALW original, having played in the League’s first season for Sydney FC in 2008/09. The following year, she moved to the Central Coast Mariners, where she bagged 11 goals to win the Golden Boot and the Julie Dolan Medal as player of the season.
In 2010, she was on the move again, this time to Canberra. In the 2011/12 season, her 15 goals propelled the club from the capital to a Premiership and Championship double, as well as another Golden Boot.
Owing to the short Australian season, there were also short stints in Denmark with Brøndby in 2012 and the United States with Western New York Flash in 2015, as well as Illawarra Stingrays in the NPL NSW during the offseason in 2016.
In 2018, Heyman left Canberra and signed a one year deal with Adelaide. After just one season in South Australia, she took on a second stint at Canberra in 2020, having taken a year out and won a second Julie Dolan Medal in 2021.
After her international debut in 2010, Heyman went on to score 20 goals in 61 matches for the Matildas.
She was part of the squads that finished runners-up in the 2014 Asian Cup, and made it to the quarter-finals of the 2015 World Cup. Australia lost to then world champions Japan on both occasions. Heyman also represented her country at the 2016 Rio Olympics.
Having been named in the 2018 Asian Cup squad but failing to appear in any matches, where the Matildas again lost to Japan in the final, Heyman announced her international retirement in May 2019, shortly before that summer’s World Cup in France.
As well as being the A-League’s all-time leading scorer, this season Heyman also broke Teresa Polias’ appearance record and currently sits on 163 matches.
