A-League 2023/24: Previewing the new season as Sydney FC defend their crown | OneFootball

The Liberty A-League, the top division of women’s domestic football in Australia, kicks off this weekend. There’s plenty of action to look forward to, including six senior Matildas who will be taking to the pitch for their respective teams.

Ahead of the first game-week of the new season, let’s dive into the fixtures on the board.

Central Coast Mariners vs Newcastle Jets

As the Mariners get their A-League campaign underway, Emily Husband’s side will welcome the Newcastle Jets to the Central Coast Stadium. The visitors finished 11th last season just one point clear of the bottom of the table. The hosts haven’t featured in the top flight since 2009 after a lack of funding forced them to pull out of the league.

Sydney FC vs Western Sydney

In the second game of the weekend, reigning champions Sydney FC will host their local derby as they welcome near rivals Western Sydney. The two sides last met in December with the Sky Blues taking all three points from a 2-0 victory. After an outstanding 2022/23 campaign, Ante Juric’s side will be hoping to continue last season’s success. Western Sydney finished seventh in the table last season, ending their campaign on 19 points.

Perth Glory vs Western United

After narrowly missing out on top spot last season, Western United will kick off their A-League campaign with an away tie to Perth Glory. The two sides last met in February with Glory taking all three points from a blockbuster five-goal game. Mark Torcasso’s side will be hoping to get their season off to a strong start as they look to further the progress made in their debut A-League campaign.

Wellington Phoenix vs Melbourne City

After a disappointing end to the 2022/23 campaign, Wellington Phoenix will get their domestic season underway hosting Melbourne City. The last two meetings between the two sides have seen Sunday’s visitors score eight goals, conceding just one in the process. With Wellington finishing bottom of the a league last season having taken just 13 points from a possible 54, Paul Temple’s side will be hoping for a change of fortune as they embark on their third top-flight campaign.

Adelaide United vs Canberra United

Finishing just outside the grand final qualification spots, Canberra United will have plenty to play for as they head into the new season. The two sides last met back in March with Canberra pulling off a 4-2 Victory at Mckellar Park. Adelaide United finished last Seasons campaign in eighth having won just eight games from a possible 18.

Melbourne Victory vs Brisbane Roar

In the final game of the opening weekend, Melbourne Victory will welcome Brisbane Roar to the home of the Matildas. The two sides met back in March with the tie ending in a 1-1 draw. Despite the scoreline, Victory dominated for much of the game with Sunday’s hosts enjoying more than 60% percent of the possession. With Roar having finished ninth in the table, having taken just 18 points from a possible 54, manager Garrath McPherson will be hoping to improve on last season’s disappointing performance.
